THE EIGHTH INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON SPOUTED BEDS, ISSB-8, is the 8th conference in a series which started in 1973 in Canada. The first four symposia (ISSB-1 to ISSB-4) were all held in Vancouver in conjunction with Canadian Chemical Engineering conferences, with Kishan Mathur as the Chair of ISSB-1 (1973) and Norman Epstein as the Chair of ISSB-2, ISSB-3 and ISSB-4 (1982, 1991 and 2002). ISSB-5 was held in Beijing, China, in 2008, co-chaired by Xiaojun Bao (China University of Petroleum, Beijing) and Jim Lim (the University of British Columbia). ISSB-6 was held again in Vancouver, B.C., in 2012, during the 62nd Canadian Chemical Engineering conference, with Jim Lim as Chair, and Xiaojun Bao, Martin Olazar and Sandra Rocha as Co-Chairs. ISSB-7 was held in Barcelona, Spain, in 2017, joining the 10th World Congress of Chemical Engineering, with Martin Olazar as Chair, and Jim Lim, Wenqi Zhong and Marcos Barrozo as Co-Chairs.


The 8th symposium (ISSB-8) will be held as a joint event with the 14th International Conference on Circulating Fluidized Bed Technology (CFB-14) in Taiyuan, China, on July 21-24, 2024. The symposium will be jointly chaired by Xiaotao Bi and Martin Olazar, and dedicated to honor Prof. Norman Epstein, who initiated and cultivated this spouted bed conference series to promote spouted beds, and died in August 2023 at an age of 99.


ISSB-8 will continue the tradition of this conference series, with its focus on fundamental research on spouted beds, but also expand into emerging applications of spouted bed and novel spouted bed technologies, especially those related to new processes for the production of environment-friendly chemicals, pharmaceuticals and clean energy, such as hydrogen, bio-fuels and energetic materials. ISSB-8 will offer a unique platform to promote exchanges between all fields using spouted beds, and you are warmly invited to participate. 

Symposium Topics

ISSB-8 will focus on, but not confined to, the following topics 

  1. Hydrodynamics of Spouted and Spout-Fluid Beds. 
  2. Heat and Mass Transfer.
  3. Modeling and Scale-Up. 
  4. Spouted and Spout-Fluid Bed Reactors.
  5. Physical Operations

Call for Papers

Prospective authors are requested to submit abstracts of their papers by February 28, 2024. Notifications on acceptance of the paper for presentation will be provided in March 31, 2024. A special issue (Advances in Spouted Beds) of Particuology has been planned to publish full papers following standard review procedures of the Journal. Instructions on how to submit full manuscripts to this special issue will be provided after abstracts are accepted, with a targeted submission due date of September 2024. 


The abstract should be prepared following the same template as CFB-14, available for download from the CFB-14 website (www.CFB14.org.cn) uploaded online to the CFB-14 website: www.CFB14.org.cn. When you submit the abstract, please go to ISSB-8 site and select the “8thSpouted Bed Symposium” to submit your abstract. 

Important Dates

  • February 28, 2024, receipt of abstracts 
  • March 31, 2024, notification of abstract acceptance 
  • July 21-24, 2024, conference in Taiyan, China
  • September 30, 2024, start day for submission of full manuscripts to Particuology
  • December 31, 2024, deadline for submission of final version of manuscripts
  • March 31, 2025, publication of special issue in Particuology
